¿Cuándo y por qué se realiza un pago si un software tiene una licencia de código abierto (GPL, ...)?

La mayoría de los productos disponibles en este mercado son gratuitos y se pueden descargar directamente desde él. En este caso, no se requiere ningún pago.

Sin embargo, algunos autores deciden cobrar algo por distribuir sus obras. No hay problema en conciliar ambos enfoques (precio para distribuir el código versus licencia de código abierto): la Fundación para el Software Libre, que ha creado la Licencia GPL de GNU, una de las licencias más utilizadas para el software de código abierto, lo permite y lo fomenta, y proporciona algunas explicaciones en esta página:
