Label designer for Dolibarr: a true-to-scale visual editor, 14 kinds of record, 33 barcodes, 8 templates included

Draw your labels exactly the way you want them, then print a whole sheet of them from any list in Dolibarr. The label is drawn to scale, at the size it will leave the printer: you drag pieces onto it with the mouse, pull their corners to resize them, and nudge them a quarter of a millimetre at a time with the arrow keys. Beside the canvas the same pieces are listed with their exact coordinates in millimetres, and the two always agree. Where the original app sells eight paid extensions to reach beyond products and contacts, this module knows fourteen kinds of record from the start — products, third parties, contacts, members, users, lots and serial numbers, warehouses, shipments, receptions, customer and supplier orders, invoices, fixed assets, tickets — with every one of their fields and your own extra fields. 

Who is it for? Shops that redo their shelf tickets at every price change, warehouses marking bays and lots, workshops labelling batches, dispatch desks sticking addresses on parcels, associations printing member badges — and anyone who has already wasted a sheet of self-adhesive labels because the grid fell a few millimetres off.

A true visual editor, drawn to scale

• The label is drawn at the size it prints, with the inner margin marked and a five-millimetre grid behind it.
• Drag a piece to move it, pull its corner to resize it: everything snaps to a quarter of a millimetre and nothing can leave the usable area.
• The arrow keys nudge by a quarter of a millimetre, or a whole one with Shift — for the last adjustment, the one you cannot make with a mouse.
• Every move is saved at once: no button to hunt for, no work lost.
• Beside the canvas, the list of pieces with their exact coordinates in millimetres, following the canvas live — and the other way round.
• The drawing order is set with arrows: a piece drawn later passes over the ones before it.
• Zoom from two to eight pixels per millimetre, remembered from one page to the next.
• The form only shows what makes sense for the kind of piece chosen: a barcode has no line spacing, a rule has no prefix.
• A Preview as PDF button prints a whole sheet with made-up values, or with a real record you choose.

Eight kinds of piece on a label

• Free text: your own words, with field names in braces replaced when it prints — {label} – {ref}. On several lines if you like.
• Field: a single field of the record, chosen from a list, with a prefix and a suffix.
• Price: an amount set the way your Dolibarr sets amounts, with or without tax, with or without the currency, with or without the unit.
• Barcode and QR code: drawn from a field, with the figures printed underneath if you want them.
• Picture: the record's own picture (the product photo, the third party's logo, the member's portrait), your company logo, or a file of your choosing.
• Rule and box: to separate, to frame, or to lay a block of colour behind some text.
• Every piece carries its own typeface, size, bold, italic, capitals, horizontal and vertical alignment, line spacing, text, background and border colours, and rotation at 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees.
• Wrap and shrink to fit: an over-long name gets smaller neatly instead of spilling over, and never below 45 % of the size asked for.
• One condition per piece: barcode, !barcode, price > 0, country_code = FR, and several joined with and or or. That is how a product with no barcode prints its reference in large type instead, leaving no gap.

Fourteen kinds of record, at no extra cost

• Products and services: reference, label, description, barcode, weight, dimensions, volume, customs code, unit, VAT, stock, alert threshold, average cost, cost price — plus prices, the photo and your extra fields.
• Third parties: name, trading name, full address, country, phone, email, customer and supplier codes, VAT number, professional identifiers, logo.
• Contacts, members and users: name, first name, job, company, address, email, photo, membership type, subscription end, employee number.
• Lots and serial numbers: batch number, product and its reference, use-by date, sell-by date, end of life, manufacturing date.
• Warehouses: reference, label, location, address — everything needed to mark an aisle or a bay.
• Shipments and receptions: reference, tracking number, dates, weight, third party and its delivery address.
• Customer orders, supplier orders and invoices: references, dates, totals, third party.
• Fixed assets and tickets: reference, label, acquisition value, dates, subject, tracking id.
• Your own extra fields are available everywhere, automatically, under the label you gave them.
• And values that are always there: {company_name}, {company_address}, {today}, {user_name}, {copy_index} of {copy_total}, and {address_block}, which lays out a whole postal address in a single piece.

Thirty-three barcodes and 2D codes

• Thirty linear codes: Code 128 and its three subsets, Code 39 plain and extended with or without a check digit, Code 93, Code 11, Codabar, EAN 13, EAN 8, EAN 2, EAN 5, UPC-A, UPC-E, Interleaved and Standard 2 of 5, MSI, Pharmacode, two-track Pharmacode, POSTNET, PLANET, RM4SCC, KIX, Intelligent Mail.
• Three square codes: QR Code, Data Matrix and PDF417.
• Nothing to install: all of it comes from the PDF engine Dolibarr already carries. The module behaves the same on a server with no way out to the internet.
• Values are prepared before they are drawn: spaces and dashes stripped from numeric codes, capitals imposed where they are required, a nought added in front of an odd count of figures.
• The check digit of an EAN or a UPC is verified: a code whose last figure does not match the rest is never printed as though it were sound.
• A value that does not suit the code asked for is printed as Code 128 — or left out, as you prefer — and the sheet comes out anyway, with a warning naming the record and the reason.
• Per-code options: figures printed underneath, white on black, transparent background, and an adjustable width in use that keeps the quiet zone a scanner expects.

Prices, printed the way they should be

• Selling price, promotional price, saving in money, saving in per cent: four kinds of price piece.
• Every price level Dolibarr keeps, when your installation keeps several, with a second level named as the promotional one.
• A customer's own prices come before the catalogue when you name that customer in the wizard — everything needed for a set of labels for one particular deal.
• With or without tax, with or without the currency, with or without the unit, and the number of decimals in your hands — piece by piece.
• A promotional price identical to the selling price is not a promotion: the piece does not print and no saving is worked out. No more « Now €89.90 » under « €89.90 ».
• A price piece can also name another field: an order total, the acquisition value of a fixed asset.

The sheet, the grid and the paper

• A4, A5, A3, Letter, Legal or a size of your own, upright or on its side.
• The four margins and the two gaps between labels, in millimetres — exactly the numbers printed on the packaging of your label sheets.
• Work out the label size from the grid, or work out the grid from the label size: the module does the arithmetic for you.
• A plain warning when the grid asks for more room than the sheet can give, with the labels that fall outside drawn in red.
• Places to skip: pick up a sheet already partly used by leaving the first labels empty, hatched in the preview.
• Cut marks in the margins, a border with width, colour and rounded corners, a background colour, and an inner margin every piece respects.
• Copies per record: typed in the wizard, or taken from a field of the record so that each product asks for the right number by itself.

The wizard, and Dolibarr's own lists

• A wizard on one page: what to print on at the left, what to print at the right, and a summary saying how many records, labels and sheets will come out.
• A search by reference or by name, suited to the kind of record, and a number of copies on each line.
• A Print labels entry in the mass-action menu of the lists: products, third parties, contacts, members, users, lots, warehouses, shipments, receptions, orders, invoices, fixed assets, tickets.
• A Labels button on the card of every record that can carry one.
• The selection travels in the session: tick three hundred rows and all three hundred arrive.
• The sheet is downloaded or shown in the browser, as you prefer, and is not kept on the server unless you want it kept.
• Two adjustable guards — a count of records and a count of labels — so that a whole catalogue ticked by mistake never reaches the printer.
• A print log: the template, the kind of record, the counts, how long it took, who did it, how it ended. With figures over thirty days and the templates used most.

Eight templates ready on day one

• Product 57 × 38 mm: label, reference, price, barcode — and the reference in large type instead of the barcode for products that have none. 21 to an A4 sheet.
• Product 52 × 30 mm: the same, denser, 27 to an A4 sheet.
• Address 4 in × 1⅓ in: a third party's postal address in one piece, 14 to a Letter sheet.
• Shelf ticket with EAN 13: a very large price, a conditional promotional price, the EAN 13 with its figures, the reference and the unit. 21 to an A4 sheet.
• Lot or serial number: product, batch number, each date conditional, the lot barcode. 16 to an A4 sheet.
• Shipment label A6: your logo and address, the delivery address in large type, the tracking barcode, the weight, the planned date, and cut marks. 4 to an A4 sheet.
• Warehouse or shelf 105 × 74 mm: the name in sixteen point, a QR code and a large barcode. 8 to an A4 sheet.
• Member badge 85.6 × 54 mm: bank-card size, rounded corners, logo, name, membership, QR code and subscription end. 10 to an A4 sheet.
• All of them can be changed and duplicated: the right way to start is to duplicate one rather than begin from an empty label.

Settings, permissions, import and export

• Six permissions: print, read, create and change, delete, import and export, change the settings.
• Settings per user: a template to start from, and the list of templates a person may use — which spares the wrong-template mistake, the one that costs a sheet of labels every time.
• Import and export as XML: a template travels with its sheet, its grid and all its pieces, from a test installation to production. Three ways to handle a reference already taken.
• Twenty-four settings in seven groups: behaviour, prices, barcodes, editor, previews, housekeeping, colours.
• Take the place of Dolibarr's own sticker sheet in the lists, so there is only one path to follow.
• A scheduled housekeeping job: it trims the log, empties the previews and removes sheets kept too long. It also runs by hand and from the command line.
• Multi-company: templates, settings and log kept apart by entity.
• Five languages, written out in full: English, French, Italian, German and Spanish.

Technical information

• Dolibarr 16 and later, tested on Dolibarr 23.0.4 — PHP 7.4 to 8.4 — MySQL / MariaDB.
• No Dolibarr module required: only the kinds of record whose own module is turned on are offered.
• No third-party library, no call to the internet: barcodes, QR codes and PDFs all come from what Dolibarr already installs. The BCMath extension matters only to the Intelligent Mail code.
• Four tables only, prefixed llx_labelbuilder_. Nothing in the core of Dolibarr is changed, and the module only reads your data in order to print it.
• Installed through Deploy/install external module, or by unzipping the archive into custom/.
• Comes with a 48-page PDF handbook: getting started, the editor, barcodes, prices, conditions, the wizard, settings, frequently asked questions and a technical sheet.
